25 AUGUST, Noto celebrates its Patron Saint, San Corrado.
This is a great day for the people of Noto. It is a local holiday for banks, Government Offices, and most local businesses, in observance of this special day.
The Celebration and Procession begin from the main Cathedral Saint Nicolas on the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where the statue is kept all year round.
Today it is carried on the shoulders of the local citizens who sing and shout loudly in Sicilian “Evviva San Corrado”! “We call you with every beat of our hearts”
Subsequently, the urn of the Saint is carried around this little town of Noto
Subsequently, the Urn of the Saint is carried around this little town of Noto with a succession of Confraternities and the “Cili”, which are large decorative candles supported by wooden barrels. The candles are painted inside with the story of the Saint.
There is a band that plays and accompanies the procession throughout its journey through the town.
The “Pilgrim Trip” attracts pilgrims from near and far, from other countries, who want to participate and show their respects to Saint Corrado.
Although this is a local holiday with most businesses being closed – there is a lot happening in Noto, with many large Markets open in the main square, known as The Villa.
Local families can be seen enjoying the holiday of San Corrado, visiting the Markets after the festivities.
